Houston Ship Channel Barge Collision

Houston Ship Channel Barge Collision

The City of Seabrook is in contact with the Coast Guard who has been established as the Unified Command responding to the collision in the Houston Ship Channel which happened around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019, approximately two and a half miles east of the Bayport Cruise Terminal.

The tanker Genesis River and the tug Voyager collided, according to the Coast Guard’s press release. The tug was transporting two barges loaded with a gasoline blendstock Reformate. One barge capsized and the other was damaged. An estimated 25,000 barrels of Reformate were loaded on each barge. Unified Command is still determining the amount of product that has been released from the damaged barge. No injuries of the crew were reported and responding agencies are actively developing a plan for clean up.

Air monitoring is being conducted along the coastline and is now moving inland. If any readings are above actionable levels, advisories will be released. Unified Command will be releasing a phone number and website to report or view more information about air quality. In addition, responding agencies will be monitoring the weather and the impact it may have on air quality.

The Texas General Land Office will be working with Texas Parks and Wildlife on how the incident will impact area fishing and marine activities.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
