Boy Scout Troop 870 makes recycling easy in Seabrook parks

Christopher Colling, with the Clear Lake Boy Scout Troop 870, connected with Seabrook Public Works last summer hoping to partner with the city to help achieve his rank as an Eagle Scout. Colling envisioned building custom recycling bins for Seabrook's parks and hike and bike trails.

Colling worked alongside 17 additional scouts within his troop as well as six chaperones to make this project a reality. The scouts worked diligently to manufacture each of the bins by hand. Colling, with the assistance of his fellow scouts, created detailed renderings of what they wanted the bins to look like as well as dimensions for each bin. The scouts planned and constructed the bins at a city’s storage facility located near Pine Gully Park.

Prior to Colling’s suggestion and the hard work of Boy Scout Troop 870, residents and visitors visiting city parks had nowhere to recycle their plastic, glass and paper goods. Colling said, “I hope my Eagle Scout conservation project will provide long-term benefits for the Seabrook community and the environment.” Once the project was complete, Seabrook Public Works placed the hand-crafted bins at City Hall, the Seabrook Community House, on Main Street and at several parks including Baybrook Park, Friendship Park, Pine Gully Park and McHale Park.

On Tuesday, February 19, 2019, Colling presented his project to the Seabrook City Council. Seabrook Mayor Thom Kolupski commented, "These bins are a great and welcomed addition to our parks. We are grateful to Christopher and the boy scouts for their willingness to serve the Seabrook community.
